Tampa moms produce eco-friendly (and pretty darn cute!) children’s clothing line

@ examiner.com
Danielle O’Connor and Shari Feldman met at the University of South Florida while pursuing their doctorates in Anthropology. In 2003, the friends traveled to Guatemala where they became fascinated with the textiles worn by the local indigenous people. Soon, they both became mothers and although their focus shifted to their families, their appreciation of cultures and their memories of Guatemala never faded.

The young mothers became inspired by the love for their children and their reminiscence of the beautiful Mayan textiles. This is where the idea for Chi Chi Amor was born. In 2006, Shari and Danielle took a few trips to Panajachel, Guatemala where they met with several textile producers. Together they developed a line of unique children’s clothing that integrated Mayan textiles with contemporary western fashion. Their products are handmade by small family groups who work in collaboration with Chi Chi Amor to design and produce their garments. Danielle and Shari take great care to assure that all of the Guatemalan collaborators will be paid for their work according to the prices they set for themselves and are recognized for their artistry.

    Shake, rattle and bark

    @ CoolMomPicks.com
I make no apologies about dissuading people from giving stuffed animals as baby gifts because the damn things just seem to spawn and multiply overnight. But I could easily make an exception when it comes to the gorgeous plush baby rattles that are a result of an awesome collaboration between artist P$YNNER and the mom-owners of Chi Chi Amor.

Each animal and doll rattle is handcrafted from soft felt and a recycled Huipil, a traditional Guatemalan shirt, making it a completely one-of-a-kind piece. And the rattle inside turns it from simply a baby-sized lovey into an actual toy. These sweet rattles are obviously created with love, and that’s just the message that be giving when you hand one to a new baby.

I’m In a Guatemalan State of Mind

    @ coolmompicks.com
I love local flea markets and craft fairs, provided the cool stuff outnumbers the lucite “keepsakes” and fell-off-a-truck tube socks by 3:1. Last year on a jaunt through the Ybor city market in Tampa the sigOth came across the wonderful imports from Chi Chi Amor.

The business is a true labor of love for the globally-minded owners who track down eco-friendly, fair trade items, mostly from Guatamalan artisans. Scour the site for the kinds of clothes that demand to be worn barefoot in the summer sun - Naturally dyed bright basics for kids, organic cotton tanks, and my favorite, the floral embroidered white dresses and tops that my girls would live in every day of summer if it were up to me.

They’ve just added fun little gifts too, like a colorful fabric elephant bank or handmade baby booties from recycled cotton huipil, a traditional Mayan garment.

Hit the website and go nuts. It’s not exactly as fun as an open-air market, but it’s certainly cheaper than airfare to Tampa these days.

Between the Shows: Chi Chi Amor

    @ JamesGirone.com
Finding creative inspiration in the markets of Guatemala, the designers work with artisans there to fashion apparel and one-of-a-kind accessories from re-purposed “huipils.” (A huipil is a shirt worn and hand-woven by indigenous Mayan women.)

For Spring 2009, the duo are introducing the accessories of Tampa-based P$ynner, who is also influenced by the unique color palette and fine hand-work in Guatemala.

For Spring 2009, Danielle says, “We are sticking with comfort, charisma, sweetness, long-wearability, and the endless possibilities our designs provide for layering.” The palettes fall into three categories: Pastel, bright and earth tones, depending on the particular mix of huipils.

Chi Chi Amor’s Recycled Textile Birdie Tote

    @ Inhabitots.com
There is no question that we love our eco-friendly plush toys and wide-eyed owls here at Inhabitots, but cute products that are functional and also sustainably produced from recycled textiles are sure to ruffle our feathers even more. Chi Chi Amor’s Birdie Tote Bag has to be one of the more adorable things we have seen for kids in the New Year. We love the idea of sending our little ones off to school with a birdie friend crafted out of recycled Guatemalan textiles. The Chi Chi Bird has a real story to tell, and it is a great one to share with everyone you encounter along the path of your little one’s exciting adventures.
